Kitchen's Floor / At Real Bad / CD / Breakdance The Dawn / BDTD170

Picture of At Real Bad
This is Kitchen's Floor flying in the dead of night with nothing more than Matt Kennedy's acoustic guitar and take-it or leave-it vocal delivery. Recorded live at Brisbane's "Real Bad" centre by Matt Earle in December 2012, the disc features eight stripped-to-the-bone tracks of the project's beautifully rambling slop-rock/pop songs that seem to embody the benefits of modern-day consumer capitalism: futility, hopelessness, alcoholism, depression, and suicide. Come join the party.

Kitchen's Floor / Live In Brisbane / 12" Vinyl / Quemada Records / QUE007

Picture of Live In Brisbane
"Live In Brisbane" sees the Kitchen's Floor "Too Dead To Notice" tape, originally released in a run of 100 copies on the Negative Guest List Records label in 2010, upgraded to vinyl by the New York-based Quemada Records imprint. This is Kitchen's Floor stripped to its essentials and in compelling form, with Matt Kennedy on acoustic guitar, Julia Norris on drums (in what was her last show with the band), and Andrew McLellan (Cured Pink et al) on an "almost in-tune" organ). The vinyl, which has been re-mastered, perfectly captures the raw--sometimes shambolic but always sincere--basement-rock that brought Kitchen's Floor to the attention of the Siltbreeze label in 2011. It's a compelling acoustic performance that gives the often-banal lyrical subjects room to stand-up tall and step forward, despite (and perhaps because of) the acceptance of a "bitter defeat". A reality-check and an essential dose of head-nodding realism for anyone who’s failed to notice that the glossy ads are a smokescreen. Includes superb liner notes by Joel Stern (Sky Needle and Disembraining Machine et al).
