Tears seem to have made sufficient space for a shy smile on Miaux's latest audio massage, although the general mood remains that of being ”alone in a bar at 6am while the cleaner politely asks you to put your feet up, like all the other furniture“. Let's keep things simple and clear, like in Sarajevo: A and B are the same on this cassette; the audio was created as a soundtrack for a screening of René Clair's silent movie Paris Qui Dort from 1923. Miaux must have been younger than her wild child is right now. Being woken up with Tubular Bells daily as a child instead of the ringtone that seems to be stuck in Antwerp cathedral certainly made its mark… Instead of playing with talking dolls everyday, Miaux had to drill for gold to procure a bowl of Balkan soup, resulting in the beauty her destroyed hands push out of these keys!

Second generation New York School poet, one-time Bolinas resident. Son of the legendary Armenian/American writer William Saroyan, former president of PEN USA West, partaker in the legendary expedition to interview Jack Kerouac for the Paris Review. Teacher, playwright, novelist, biographer and performer. His one-word minimal poetry shook the literary establishment, his memoirs make us long for times gone by. An American master. On the tape Aram Saroyan is interviewed by Michael C. Ford for radiostation KPFK, Los Angeles 2014. There´s a performance together with Doors drummer John Densmore at the Armenian Music Awards, 2002, Glendale California and an excerpt from an evening at Alias Books, Los Angeles 2014. Silkscreened covers and inserts. Limited to 100 copies. Counter Culture Chronicles.
First new recordings in five years from Aaron Davis. Slow-moving riffs and minimal drum machine emerging from his trademark tonal sea. Released on the recently-revived Monorail Trespassing label in a limited edition of 100 copies.
“Buddy’s News” sells Maxim, poppers, National Review and Goat Weed Extract. It sits in a kiosk at the corner of urban sleaze and suburban bleach—a fertile arena for Siobhan’s demented electronica. In this arena, Siobhan’s sound shifts ever so slightly. Monster-guzzler machismo is curbed in favor of something subtler and more colorful. Beats bleed out into textures; kick-drums give way to hi-end melodies and purring synths. The snare drum gets so mushy it spreads like Blue Bonnet at room temperature. There are still headbangers, but the palette is attenuated, washed out, bongripped. Buddy’s-News-and-chill is the order of the day. Covers are letterpresses and splatter-bleached.

"CALLS presents 11 improvised pieces recorded on a reel-to-reel machine throughout 2015 and 2016. Employing a mixed bag of source material and a half drafted vocal approach, these 11 tracks explore the notion of ‘contact calls’, which are irregular, non-specific sounds many social animals make to maintain contact within a group. The group in this instance includes more than just other members; an expanded cast of objects, figures, nature, and works of art act as the recipients of these calls. There is some sort of dialogue between myself as the caller, and this conglomerate of recipients, but it is not normal talking. I’m not asking questions, responding to requests, or reacting through sound in any way – just simply keeping in contact". Matthew P. Hopkins, August 2016"

Fourth release from Ligature, the solo project of Chris Hansell (Ascetic House, Warthog et al). "Claustrophone" presents two tracks of crude tape loop manipulations on field recordings and voice interspersed with poignant strings provided by C. Spencer Yeh to create a formidable portrait of today’s turmoil in the Big Apple. Released on Italian underground label Joy De Vivre in a limited edition of 100 copies."

A new tape by Sweat Tongue! Dark Star is their first release as a four-piece. Gijs Deddens has joined the band on based guitar, adding slippery lines of low end to their bare bones, broken down ‘no rock’ sound. The recordings on Dark Star are from their second meeting ever. As always fully improvised. It finds the group exploring new dynamics, new highs, new lows, creating some really exciting music in the process. “Sweat Tongue have become a quartet, with the addition of a bass player, but in no way they are now more conventional in their approach. They play some great no wave ‘rock’ music that defies melody, artistry, logic but sometimes it has a great rhythm, loud guitars and a great bass, while the singer moans, groans, whispers and shouts. This total free music, but one easily hears that these four people know what they are doing; this is not one of those ‘let’s pick up a guitar and see what it can do’ bands. Sweat Tongue is a great band, both in concert, but also on tape. This is their best release so far.” FdW – Vital Weekly

An intimate look, Allen Ginsberg on tour in 1979 featuring Peter Orlovsky, Harry Hoogstraten and Steven Taylor. Allen and his party travel by bus to Gent after a successful reading at the Leeuwerik in Eindhoven. They are joined on the trip by organiser Benn Posset, Simon Vinkenoog and a clueless journalist. Harry´s beau Suze Hahn is at the wheel. Allen talks about politics, his relationship with Jack Kerouac, recites poetry and gives a crash course on traditional and modern verse. The conversation continues at a local bookshop, we follow Allen to the concert hall and the tape concludes with a couple of songs on stage. Recorded by Harry Hoogstraten. Silkscreened covers & inserts. Limited to 100 copies. Counter Culture Chronicles.

What makes this tape different from all other Ignatz tapes? Not much really. The hermitic constancy of Ignatz’s songs is part of his greatness. This is Belgium’s finest guitar loner doing what he always does—sending chills down spines by way of the minor pentatonic. There is, however, something distinctly “at ease” about these recordings. They are longer and dreamier than previous ones. Ignatz’s voice is softer and rounder. What once were funeral songs now sound hymnal; some almost have an Americana pietism. Perhaps the move from Brussels to the small town of Landen gave license to Ignatz’s solitary tendencies. I’m inclined to believe in the album title’s joyousness (the last one was called “I Hate this City”). I guess this is Ignatz when things are going pretty well.
Edition of 100. ““The classic book, so readable now.” Footsteps and a passing automobile introduce daily comedy and the droll slake of boredom. Vitrine is honored to announce the newest release by British artist Russell Walker, I never see my pal. Russell Walkers work inhabits an impressive and idiosyncratic sector, from the frayed post-punk of the Phermoans to the synth preambles of the Bomber Jackets. This alone makes Walker an intriguing contemporary figure. His work in the Charcoal Owls, Teleporters and under his own name, on the other hand, paints a Pickmans Model of parochial malaise and out of bounds art rock. I never see my pal compiles, for the first time on cassette, two rare and deleted Savoury Days CDrs. “You wouldnt have got them if I didnt like…these. I want these.” While Side As Willow Session contrasts field recordings with penumbral acoustic sketches, The Thwartee of Side B combines dour shortwave with the eldritch banality of Mark E Smiths the Post-Nearly Man. Musicality is drained of semblance and incidental sound gains fragile primacy. Crude keyboard. Television from the other room. Wind interference. Guitar and voice made strange and uncommon. Words smell of stale beer. The nightmare is the accuracy of life on dreadful display. Casual occurrence falls into inevitability. Heres another chance to pick up two of the most confounding and vital releases of the past five years. “I want to change what people see when they look at me.” - Vitrine.

It´s the year 1978, Harry Hoogstraten and fellow poets Jim Koller and Franco Beltrametti are succesfully touring the USA. A heavy schedule, long drives, travelling huddled together in Jim´s car.On arrival in Indiana Harry books a motelroom all for himself, he just needs some space, some time alone. The TV is on, a beauty contest is shown, Harry takes out his notes, switches on his walkman and starts the Indiana Motel Monologue as a spoken letter to his girlfriend. It´s not known if she ever heard it, fact is the results lay dormant for years. Luckily the tape was recently rediscovered, tucked away in a shoebox, and handed over to us. Harry consIders the recording as one of his best works, it´s now available for everyone to hear! Silkscreened covers & inserts. Limited to 100 copies. Counter Culture Chronicles.

“Post-Body” is a four-part suite that plots a psychological breakdown—a “depersonalization episode” wherein the subject no longer believes that he is real. Our protagonist is Wormhole, a suitable name for one who does not exist. And the tracks on this tape follow the evolution of his strange condition. First is “I’m Wormhole”, a fall into psychosis conjured through minimal Kosmische. Then “U Failed Me” and “Jacked In”—two prowling electro instrumentals that mark the heat of Wormhole’s vision. Finally, “Wormhole’s Departure”, a drifting synthesizer denouement in which our protagonist withdraws from hallucination. Magnetizer’s finespun keyboard runs throughout: staccato baselines, delicate swells, and melodic counterpoint dosed with finesse. The album remains a twisted vision of the lowliest wastoid, but nimble fingers and compositional tact render this vision with cinematic effect. Magnetizer locates the sweet-spot of outsider bonehead and measured instrumentalist, thwarting each one with the other.

Leif Brush (b. 1932) is a pioneering sound artist who for over five decades has built something of a vast labyrinth of an artistic presence, in a certain sense having existed on the fringes of the more esoteric strands of early sound practices. During his time as a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 60’s, Brush explored large scale installations that would often utilize the city’s landscape as a platform for steel-strand based sounding constructs. After going on to become a professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth, he began to expand upon his ever-evolving concept of the “terrain instrument”, generally defined as a physical construct situated in nature that would harness the forces and vibrations of the earth in order to generate various types of sonic phenomena, often via the activation of triggers and sensors. Stitched Phenomena contains the entirety of Brush’s 2004 flagship composition “Earth Star Songs”, a 47 minute long “stitching” of sounds and recordings taken from an array of his analog constructs and terrain instruments spanning decades, paired with recordings produced by Jerry Chamkis’ Kosmophone. The result is an inexhaustibly complex amalgamation of hard-edged terrestrial and tactile phenomena contrasted by cosmically sourced retro-futuristic synth interjections. Prior to now, this piece had only ever existed on the internet in the form of low quality mp3’s during the earlier days of netlabels. This issue marks its first ever physical release in proper form, rescued in full quality from its original master tape. In an edition of 100 with updated 2017 cover art by Brush himself.

Edition of 100. "Vitrine is thrilled to announce a new cassette from Pennsylvania-based visual artist and instrument builder, Jim Strong. The Sallow Rakes runs a triathlon down the middle and back again through Strongs varied repertoire, which encompasses broken electronics, free improvisation, crank-based mechanisms and sound poetry. His work marries dance and video with homespun artifacts of painting and hand-built machinery. The Sallow Rakes suggests the most curious reaches of mail art and sound poetry, reminding the listener of under appreciated acts of the Underwhich Audiographics family such as DUCT and Tekst. Vitrine alumni Mel Bentley provides text and voice as counterpoint to Strongs amorphous instrumentation and spoken word. Rubber burns on a pyre of wet oak. Breath bleeds into the more discreet sounds of the body. Jim Strong has made a name for himself privileging the collaborative and intuitive serendipity of performance. That said, The Sallow Rakes is an inclusive marvel which yet speaks of a focused and individual personality. The protein mirror. Bob Cobbings work in Konkrete Canticle is a possible road marker, but that doesnt quite get the adventurous traveler all the way there. This is an invented compass, pointing to a True North beyond the axises. Here, an interior mystery play of device.” - Vitrine."

Club Sound Witches is Matt Earle and Nicola Morton from Breakdance the Dawn. They mine keyboards and mixers for errors, glitches, distortion, and compression, chewing and macerating beats until something pastelike pushes out the other end. The signals are blurry and pulpous—almost gastronomic, like sound waves passing through so much digestion. By teasing out mechanical lapses, C.S.W. make something disturbingly corporeal—almost profane. This electronic palette does not so much elicit bodily movement as evoke the body’s movements.

"Second chapter of Bear Bones Lay Low on the Vagaciones series (the first came out a couple of years ago on our fellow's label Young Girls from Liege), which is probably Ernesto Gonzalez most psychedelic freak-out excursus in music. On this one the leading figures are the dreamy piano melodies and the obsessive percussive lines, surrounded by an aura of minimal electronics sounds. All this recorded straight on tape and quite lo-fi, which helps keeping it trippy and foggy.
