C Spencer Yeh / 1975 / CD / Intransitive Recordings / int037

Picture of 1975
Intransitive Recordings is extra-proud to present 1975, the debut solo album of tightly-coiled, crackling electronic ambience by C. Spencer Yeh. While “debut” may seem a strange word to use to describe an album by a guy with such a deep discography, Yeh explains that 1975 is like nothing anyone has heard from him before. “One thing is I really wanted to focus on a certain feeling of stasis. So much of what else I do just kinda pushes and pushes forward. 1975 is more vertical than horizontal, even though one can’t escape the horizontal completely.” Taking a confident step away from his familiar work as an improvising violinist and vocalist, from the mythology of his rock/noise band Burning Star Core, and from his recent forays into pop music, the omnivorous Yeh here reveals himself to be a composer of unsettling electro-acoustic miniatures. C S Yeh approached his source material with a desire to be transparent, even literal, and to avoid straightforward narrative. The literal is there in the deceptively matter-of-fact track titles — “Drone”, “Voice”, “Shrinkwrap from Solo Saxophone CD”, “Two Guitars” — but knowing which sound source is buried beneath these tones does little to remove 1975‘s sense of enveloping mystery. This is sensual abstract music with a light touch, a confident minimalism that only reveals its unsettling depth, sharp corners, and playful malevolence with repeat listens. For fans of Eliane Radigue, Hecker, Pita, or Kevin Drumm. Born in Taiwan, and now based in Brooklyn NY, C. Spencer Yeh is the one constant of the “band” Burning Star Core, whose other members have included Mike Shiflet and Trevor Tremaine & Robert Beatty of Hair Police. He has collaborated with a staggeringly diverse range of artists, including John Wiese, Tony Conrad, New Humans w/ Vito Aconcci, Aaron Dilloway, Okkyung Lee, Evan Parker, Yellow Swans, Greg Kelley, Paul Flaherty, Don Deitrich (of Borbetomagus), and Chris Corsano (to name just a few). Ashtray Navigations / 3 Rockets Thicken / 7" Vinyl / Trensmat / TR023

Picture of 3 Rockets Thicken
Packing 3 tracks onto their first piece of vinyl for Trensmat, the ultra-prolific Ashtray Navigations bring 20 years of recording experience to the table for you, the discerning listener. A-side 'Monkey Music/Throw Money At The Monkeys' marries gentle melodic guitar twanging to intense trebly arpeggios and ascending/descending sweeps of synth. An effect at once calming and unnerving, the ride lasts for almost six minutes, giving ample time to get lost before snapping back to reality long enough to turn the record over. 'Dinshan P Ghadali' the shorter of the two tracks on the B, is a seemingly momentary snapshot where melancholic pads and fretwork intertwine beneath a slow electronic pulse. 'Rocket Dust Slipping Out Of Your Mouth Some Afternoon' begins with a clean analogue synth line that is soon accompanied by multiple layers of soaring guitars and white noise - all of which is held together for a time with sparse electronic percussion before the layers are eventually peeled back to a serene finale...and the rocket dust settles. Of course we wouldn't just leave you hanging like that -on the sleeve is a URL to take you to an exclusive digital extra piece, 'War Is Like A Cake'. This near 20-minute blowout features soothing ambient waves throughout, though it does contrast with the relative calm of the vinyl tracks - the noise war begins 55 seconds in and is served slice by slice for much of the remaining duration. VERY limited edition 7" in full colour wraparound picture sleeve. Trensmat Records.

Picture of A Paper Doll's Whisper Of Spring

It's been beautifully remastered by Denis Blackham of Skye Mastering and pressed onto 140g vinyl with DMM cut and printed sleeve, plus a Japanese obi strip. Vikki's third album (here accompanied by Andrew Chalk and Jean-Noel Rebilly- playing synthesizer and clarinet, respectively) after 2008's Whispering Pages, is a more reflective collection of pieces, often centred around the electric piano and arrangements of reeds and electronics. Released on Chalk's Faraway Press imprint in an edition of 400 copies, 'A Paper Doll's Whisper Of Spring' finds its most just publication in the analogue medium, fitting to the quality of the spirit of the eight pieces it contains. Factums / A Primitive Future / Vinyl LP / Assophon Records / ASSOPHON003

Picture of A Primitive Future
Primitive Future indeed! Its 4000 a.d. and human kind’s fate from a binge of manifest destiny has finally collapsed on itself. Now we’re back to the basics. The jungle is in charge again. The Factums have crafted a soundtrack to this dark and mysterious place. A world where the listener is the prey and this record is the hunter. This is exploratory music, a melding of rusted out kraut debris, dead c. carnage and lost in time sci-fi rock moves.

Miami Angels In America / A Public Ranking / Cassette / Night People / NP155

Picture of A Public Ranking
After a few years of deep USA underground dwelling and touring documented by a series of hard to find cult collected cassette releases, Angels in America began to surface a bit more with their excellent debut LP on Ehse Records. Recent tours saw them on the road with Mark Lord and Weyes Bluhd fitting touring mates who share much in common with Angels dark atmospheric industrial din and fuzzy science fiction synth explorations. Taking up residence across Eastern North American cities such as Baltimore, New York and Montreal, Angels are a bit hard to pin down in identity, aesthetics and location. As we type this they embark on their first European tour with a performance at the renowned Kraak Festival. Angels seem to take on variety of influences merging them all into their own distinct smear not overly representative of anything particular in terms of genre. Perhaps the easiest comparison is to the originators of their own unclassified sound which in term became its own genre...TG. In their own way Angels carry on the kind of amorphous, androgynous, but distinct sound that is hard to find so deep into history. Art by Shawn Reed. Night People Records.

Infinite Body / A Series Of False Awakenings / Vinyl LP / Arbor / ARBOR90

Picture of A Series Of False Awakenings
Kyle Parker is Infinite Body. Like most of Southern California’s harsh noise youth crew (Impregnable, Privy Seals, Pedestrian Deposit), IB is the polar opposite of Kyle’s former project, Gator Surprise. Kyle’s thoughtful and sincere work is certainly some of the most well executed around and the upcoming Infinite Body/Emaciator split LP on Monorail Trespassing will only further solidify this. In an edition of 300 LPs with proprinted foldover sleeves featuring art by Kyle.

Piss Superstition, The / A Themepark For Whatever Happened Before / Vinyl LP / Memoirs Of An Aesthete / MOA LP5

Picture of A Themepark For Whatever Happened Before
A vinyl LP limited to 250 copies by The Piss Superstition, aka the suave Mr.Bradley, a founder member of The Vibracathedral Orchestra. If you’ve never heard of them, well, I don’t believe you, but in case its true, you may remember him from Birmingham’s finest amplifier drone crew The Negative Kite, or his early duo work with Neil Campbell. Or for a series of very limited solo releases, mostly cassettes and mostly ultra limited editions, either under his own name or as A Companion As Glamorous As Sleeping On Wheels. When last sighted on stage he was blazing through “Human Cannonball” in the rockband version of Birds Of Delay. This LP is the first Julian Bradley sighting for a number of years, and the first vinyl since a ltd.100 LP on Giardia sometime in the mid-90s. “A Theme Park For Whatever Happened Before” features eight tracks of intricate electronic caligraphy produced by archaic and malfunctioning effects units, unsweetened by digital reverb or any other modern day fripperies. Fuzztone and feedback patterns pulsating and intersecting to create a unique sound which mixes drone electronics, garage psych and a lumbering dose of doom metal. It doesn’t sound quite like anything else ever, but if you can imagine The Dead C eviscerating the instrumental bits off the first Roxy Music album you’re halfway there. Mr.Bradley is not a ten-CDR-a-month man, to put it mildly, so don’t miss out on this rare vinyl appearance, which has a full pro-printed colour cover (truly a Memoirs first). Memoirs Of An Aesthete.

Geoff Mullen / Accidental Guitars / Vinyl LP / REL Records / REL018 LP

Picture of Accidental Guitars
Geoff Mullen presents a new side of his ever-changing and open language, dealing here with his rawest material to date, and in many ways finding himself in a homecoming to the guitar. On ‘accidental guitars’ geoff expands his instrumental language with his unique variety of invented, accident-prone technique.Re-contextualized live performances are filtered through an intuitive sense of form and pretexts, leaving us with an intense, jarring, pointed, and textural compositional language. With little more than an electric guitar, he conjures abstract formations and clattering percussive tones that are starkly contrasted with tape hiss and sudden echoplex’d delay. Sustains calm the mood throughout and create a beautiful and oddly soothing atmosphere that seems to move in all directions at once. The music on ‘accidental guitars’ has an ability of creating form out of being lost, and achieves a lucidity through this sense. This record is a unique document, finding geoff between forms and excepted styles, and seeing him off, once again, in another new and exciting direction in his music. rel018 is pressed on heavy 180 gram vinyl, housed in a matte black inner sleeve, produced in a deluxe edition with multi screened designs on archival heavy stock with a insert and notes by the composer. R.E.L Records.

Acid Birds / Acid Birds / Vinyl LP / Qbico / Qbico85

Picture of Acid Birds
Acid Birds self-titled LP from Qbico. "one of the most difficult qbico to spread around by a group in which i strongly belive in (they're probably too far ahead for their time) ! i dig them without having heard a single note, just for the name and instrumentation, really ! how can a bird on acid sing badly !? impossible... i invited them to the u-nite at Issue and their set was astonishing ! Jamie is a really sweet guy and Andrew put contact mic on a huge pic nic table which was played with chains !? i saw Andrew's one-of-a-kind score for the music on this album... that LP also marked my fascination with feathers, which i used for the ltd ed. finally, since i do not like easy things, i'll continue following these Acid Birds flying NOW into the future... so get ready for vol.
